SREI Statement on Preserving the
Quality of REI Subspecialty Patient Care
The Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI) is the professional organization for American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) certified reproductive endocrinology and infertility sub-specialists. Our mission includes promoting excellence in patient care, fostering training and career development in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, supporting innovation in research, and patient advocacy. SREI affirms that fertility treatment is healthcare and that we, in the field, have a responsibility to our patients and the larger medical community to ensure that this care is of the highest quality.
As a community, we support:
- Patient care that is individualized, thoughtful, evidence-based, and comprehensive
- Equitable patient treatment
- Patient safety, with adherence to reporting and practice standards and guidelines
- Access to well-trained and highly qualified REI physicians who can practice independently, serving all individuals with reproductive disorders
- Fostering innovation in the field
High-quality care across the breadth and depth of reproductive endocrinology and infertility requires a comprehensive understanding of physiology, pathophysiology, and the principles of evidence-based medicine. We call for a commitment to rigorous, ACGME-approved training for those providing REI care to patients and for transparency in clinics regarding the qualifications of their providers. Fast-tracked training of care providers through programs that lack transparency and oversight, while seemingly expeditious, prioritizes market demand and profit over patient safety and quality of care. Infertility is a disease, and reproductive healthcare is a right. Patients deserve for their care to be led by professionals whose training meets standards set by independent entities, assuring comprehensive training, knowledge, and skills across the breadth and depth of reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
The field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) is rapidly changing, and new models of training and care are developing. As the demand for fertility and other reproductive care increases, it should be met by ABOG-certified REIs providing care. SREI is committed to supporting increased opportunities for REI fellowship training including a greater number of fellowship programs and
more training spots within those programs. Completing an accredited fellowship program, going through the board certification process, and maintaining certification helps assure that REI physicians have the training, knowledge, and skills required to provide independent, safe, and high-quality care for our patients across the spectrum of reproductive health. We are committed to working in partnership with our affiliate professional organizations and our patients to ensure this.
